Serpentine Soils Strategies

Serpentine soil - Wikipedia

Serpentine soil is an uncommon soil type produced by weathered ultramafic rock such as peridotite and its metamorphic derivatives such as serpentinite.More precisely, serpentine soil contains minerals of the serpentine subgroup, especially antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile or white asbestos, all of which are commonly found in ultramafic rocks.

Serpentine Soils - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

Serpentine soils are characterized by a pH of 6–8, low Ca and high Mg, and low levels of N, P, and K. The severely deficient levels of N, P, K, and Ca lead to most serpentine soils inhospitable to normal terrestrial plants (Nicks and Chambers, 1995; 1998).

Serpentine Soils - Ecology - Oxford Bibliographies

Several significant treatments of serpentine soils, plants, and other biota, including serpentine as a model for ecological, evolutionary, and applied studies, have been published since 1975. Proctor and Woodell 1975 provides the first review of serpentine ecology, with a focus on factors that limit plant growth on serpentine soils.

01-10-2017 · A significant decrease of pH and other effects on soil conditions were observed in pine-invaded serpentine grasslands in the eastern United States (Barton and Wallenstein, 1997, Cumming and Kelly, 2007, Burgess et al., 2015) and in a metalliferous area in Poland (Kapusta et al., 2015), whereas studies at an Italian ultramafic site (Chiarucci ...

Multiple origins of serpentine-soil endemism …

Plant specialization on soils derived from unusual parent materials is an important contributor to regional biodiversity. These stressful substrates include serpentine, gabbro, and other ultramafic rocks rich in heavy metals. The effect of substrate on plant diversity is illustrated by serpentine soils in California: they comprise less than 1% of the surface of the state (1), but serpentine ...

Polyland - Topics

The soil which is derived from weathered serpentinite rock is called serpentine. It is the predominate soil found in Poly Canyon and elsewhere on Cal Poly land, which may be viewed in our Locations page. As a corollary to serpentinite rock, serpentine soil carries the unique stone composition containing high amounts of magnesium and low amounts of calcium.
